Confession: Getting Real!
Psalm 51
- Dave Dollenbacher

A Study of Psalm 51 - Confession: Getting Real!

2 Samuel 12:1-7, 13

“David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.'” -2 Samuel 12:13

1. GET REAL WITH MYSELF

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants”. - Luke 15:18-19

2. GET REAL ABOUT OUR SIN

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment” -Matthew 5:21-22

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” -Matthew 5:27-28

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” -1 John 1:9

“You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, ‘No one sees me'; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one besides me.'” -Isaiah 47:10

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived my beloved brothers.” -James 1:14-16

3. GET REAL WITH OTHERS

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” James 5:16

4. GET REAL WITH GOD

“Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forebearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” -Romans 2:4

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” -Hebrews 13:8

“Cerate in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” -Psalm 51:10

ASSIGNMENT: CONFESSION SESSION

1.  Contrition: Get honest with yourself about your sin

2.  Confession: Agree with God about your sin

3.  Correction: Allow God to create something new in you
